Gewalt is the Berliner answer to Luis Bunuel! Just as the great Catalonian drew back the veil mercilessly on the discrete charm of the bourgeoisie, the three sound artists involved here unmask Germany’s society of affluence with equal implacability. In the process, lurking beneath they discover grimacing faces, lies, disappointments, blood and – violence. The whole thing is clothed in energetically ambitious sonics, driven by Wagner’s shouting and underlain with violent walls of sound by Henfling and Rilke. An impressive performance, German to an extent possible only in old Berlin.
