Led by saxophonist/composer Luise Volkmann and situated somewhere between a chamber ensemble and a big band with distinctive instrumentation, Été Large manages to create its own totally idiosyncratic sound, at once complex and playful, deeply ironic and yet full of sincere emotion, with displays of bundled raw power and extreme delicateness. Volkmann also succeeds in composing in a very personal style, while providing her 12 musicians (from 6 countries) with maximum space to find their own way. Rilke already foresaw it: Thank you, oh Lord, summer was grand.
