Improviser in residence 2021: Kevin Shea & Matt Mottel
The mœrs festival gets two new improvisers in residence in its anniversary year! New Yorkers Kevin Shea and Matt Mottel are no strangers to Moers. They have been guests at the festival several times, especially as the duo Talibam!
Unforgettable their Big Impact in 2018, when keyboardist Mottel faced a thunderstorm of 12 drummers - probably the loudest closing concert of all mœrs festivals! Mottel and Shea are highly imaginative, interdisciplinary artists whose political and social implications extend far beyond the musical. They have brought a lot with them for their year in Moers: they want to trace the history of German free jazz, which has established numerous connections to the USA since the 1960s. This can be seen particularly well in the programs of the mœrs festival - how fitting for the anniversary year! Projects with migrants are planned as well as numerous actions in public space, let's be surprised!
By the way, the name Talibam! originates from a headline in a New York newspaper that tried to heroically dress up the American bombardment in Afghanistan, an attack that the two artists condemn in the strongest possible terms.
