Melaku Belay and Fendika (ET)

Melaku Belay grew up in the streets of Addis Abeba, is the founder and president of the Ethiopian Dance Association and one of the leading dancers of his country – what an amazing career!

Melaku learned numerous traditional dances that are part of the daily life in Ethiopia – as expressions of spirituality, tradition and emotion. Dance and life are interwoven in various ways. He visited more than 80 ethnicities and studies their specific languages of motion. Besides the artistic aspects his work is also about communication and respect. This can not be emphasized enough these days. The enormous cultural richness of many of the sub-Saharan countries often involves the danger of tensions up to civil wars. Melaku is not only ambassador of the rich culture of his country, but also a champion of peace and understanding. He was awarded the Chevalier dans l´Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French minister of culture in 2015.

In 2009 Melaku founded the ensemble Fendika. Bases on azmari-Tradition of the capital the seven artists represent the in the core the diversity of their country. Ein azmari bet is a place of entertainment, of music and dance. A place where you meet, have fun and communicate. Fendika is deeply rooted in the Ethiopian tradition and transports ancient sounds and movements into modern times. The magic and powerful dance eskista seems like a forefather of Hip Hop and breakdance. Melakus Fendika Azmari Bet is one of the metropolis’ hottest clubs. We are looking forward to an energetic and hypnotic performance of the ensemble.
